Breakbeat is like a thread that runs through the entire history of electronic dance music, from early hip hop & electro to hardcore, downtempo and drum'n'bass... In the late '90s there was also what was simply referred to as 'breakbeats', i.e. the music which can be found on labels such as Skint, Freskanova, Wall Of Sound... an underground movement, a giant iceberg of which the 'Big Beat' phenomenon waqs nothing but the simplistic tip...
Morpheus' selection included tracks by such breakbeat pioneers as California's Bassbin Twins, New York's Kurtis Mantronik (one of the true heroes of mid-80's electro/hip hop) and London's Renegade Soundwave (with a rare, well ahead-of-its-time track from '89).
Then there's also Small Fish With Spine (aka Riz Maslen aka Neotropic aka one of the few female producers in the macho world of electronic dance), Makesome Breaksome (feat. Matt Bushwacka, who has engineered for Mr C, Shamen, Derrick Carter, Alex Reece etc.), Danmass (the anglo-italian duo whose self-confessed mission is to introduce drum'n'bass beats in house clubs...), Groove Armada (a duo of London funkheads which comprises a double winner of the Young Jazz Musician Award - Trombone & Piano Categories), Le Rosbifs (real or fake Frenchmen?) with a funky soundtracky track, Berlin's UMO (feat. Air Liquide's Jammin' Unit), and two acts with a strong hip hop background Cut and Paste and Freestylers.
